For years, Sri Lanka’s Article 12 faced scrutiny over whether “Sex” included both gender identity and sexual orientation. Now, with the introduction of the Women Empowerment Act, No. 37 of 2024 and the Assistance to and Protection of Victims of Crime and Witnesses Act, No. 10 of 2023, sexual orientation is finally recognized as grounds that cannot be used for discrimination.

These laws are monumental steps toward equality, ensuring legal protection against discrimination based on sexual orientation.
