A Reflection on the BRIDGE to Equality Team’s Gratitude towards LGBTQ Advocates in Sri Lanka

The BRIDGE to Equality team marked Valentine’s Day by expressing gratitude to individuals who have played significant roles in supporting the LGBTQ community in Sri Lanka. Despite our continuous efforts to ensure better justice outcomes and uphold the dignity and rights of Sri Lankan LGBTQ individuals, it is crucial to pause and acknowledge the invaluable support we receive.

On this Valentine’s Day, the BRIDGE team set out to convey appreciation to these essential allies, sharing love and expressing our commitment to reciprocate the support they’ve shown us.

It was truly an honor for us to meet these remarkable individuals in person, whose contributions have made a significant difference in our work.

Our deepest gratitude extends to Dr. Janaki Vidanapathirana National STD/AIDS Control Programme, a steadfast and long-time ally, whose unwavering passion strives to ensure that all individuals have equal and equitable access to healthcare, free from discrimination and judgment.

Our sincere appreciation to Honourable MP Premnath C. Dolawaththa for graciously welcoming us into his home on this day and for playing a crucial role in advancing the recognition and rights of LGBTQ persons on this island. The historic moment created by the private members bill, courtesy of Honourable MP Dolawatte, has been pivotal for the community, and we are grateful for his steadfast support in standing by it.

Our heartfelt gratitude to Hon MP Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, for meeting with us, giving us her valuable time. Her support for the penal code amendment bill and insightful guidance shared with us are sure to significantly contribute to advancing our cause, and we are sincerely thankful for her dedication.

Our sincere gratitude is extended to DIG Renuka Jayasundara for serving as a crucial focal point in the community’s engagement with the police. Her unwavering support for numerous initiatives aimed at improving the treatment of the community by law enforcement has been truly significant, and we appreciate her dedication to fostering positive change.

Our sincere thanks go to Mr. Kapilan Villavarajan Director (International Affairs) of the HRCSL for graciously accepting our token on behalf of chairperson Justice Dehideniya. Justice Dehideniya has consistently lent an ear to our requests on behalf of the LGBTQ community, unwavering in their endorsement of decriminalization and fair treatment for all marginalized communities. We appreciate their steadfast support.
