Charting the Way Forward:
Equality, Non-Discrimination and Access to Justice
for Sexual and Gender Minorities
In celebration of PRIDE and LGBTQ community achievements in the recent past; on 6 and 7 June BRIDGE to Equality hosted a conference titled ‘Charting the Way Forward: Equality, Non- Discrimination and Access to Justice for Sexual and Gender Minorities’.
This conference brought together 70 passionate individuals, united in their commitment to championing equality, non-discrimination, and access to justice for sexual and gender minorities. With a focus on dissecting international human rights law principles, particularly in the context of Sri Lanka, the event aimed to shed light on the spectrum of challenges faced by the LGBTIQ+ community and explore pathways towards positive change. The conference commenced with a speech delivered by esteemed activists from the LGBTIQ community, shedding light on grassroots perspectives.
Day one consisted of a number of panel discussions; the panels delved into the various forms of human rights violations experienced by LGBTIQ individuals. Panelists shared poignant accounts of their struggles, emphasizing the critical importance of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) and the need for robust legal support mechanisms. They also explored intersectional approaches to LGBTIQ rights movements, highlighting the interconnectedness of gender, sexuality, race, and geography in shaping experiences of discrimination and oppression. From feminist perspectives to cybersecurity concerns, the discussion underscored the multifaceted nature of the struggle for equality.
A highlight of the conference was the powerful keynote speech delivered by Dr. Janaki Vidanapathirana, whose impassioned words resonated with all in attendance. A context setting courtesy of longtime activist Damith Chandimal encapsulated the spirit of the conference, emphasizing the importance of continued dialogue, advocacy, and solidarity in the fight for equality.
As we reflect on the conference, it becomes evident that platforms like these are essential catalysts for progress in the journey towards equality. By amplifying voices, challenging norms, and mobilizing resources, we can pave the way for a more inclusive and just society for all, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. The road ahead may be long and challenging, but with unwavering commitment and collective action, a brighter future is within reach.
