3rd Media Training Workshop @Mandarina Colombo

In today’s rapidly evolving media landscape, the importance of ethical and sensitive reporting cannot be overstated, particularly when addressing sensitive issues such as sexual orientation, gender identity, and expression (SOGIE). Recently, a two-day workshop held at the Mandarina Hotel in Colombo aimed to equip media professionals with the necessary tools and knowledge to effectively report on LGBTQ-related topics. Let’s delve into the key takeaways and insights from this enlightening event.

Day 1: Understanding Diversity and Challenging Misconceptions

The workshop kicked off with an introduction by Dr. Janaki Vidanapathirana, Director of the National HIV/STD Program, Sri Lanka, setting the stage for discussions around the workshop objectives and the importance of inclusivity in media representation. Throughout the day, participants engaged in sessions covering topics such as sexual orientation, gender identity, and expression (SOGIE), as well as the legal landscape impacting the LGBTQ community in Sri Lanka.

One of the significant discussion points revolved around the diverse opinions regarding LGBTQ issues, including concerns about the expression of PRIDE within the community and perceptions of flamboyance. Dr. Janaki adeptly addressed misconceptions, emphasizing the importance of recognizing the diversity within the LGBTQ community, akin to variations observed in heterosexual individuals.

Day 2: Navigating Media Ethics and Practical Exercises

Day two of the workshop, facilitated by media analyst and veteran journalist Nalaka Gunawardana, delved into the intricacies of media ethics and its relevance when reporting on LGBTQ-related matters. Engaging discussions centered on the challenges of maintaining neutrality, managing biases, and employing sensitive language in media content creation.

Practical exercises, including conducting interviews and developing news pieces, provided participants with hands-on experience in applying their newfound knowledge. These activities fostered a deeper understanding of the complexities involved in reporting on LGBTQ issues sensitively and ethically.

Key Recommendations and Insights

Throughout the workshop, participants offered valuable insights and recommendations for improving media coverage of LGBTQ-related topics. Suggestions included sensitizing lawmakers about LGBTQ rights, conducting similar workshops for regional journalists, and developing media guidelines specific to LGBTQ news reporting.

The workshop concluded with participants demonstrating increased awareness and practical skills in reporting on LGBTQ-related issues. It underscored the importance of ongoing education and dialogue within the media industry to promote understanding and sensitivity in coverage.

Conclusion: Fostering Inclusive Media Practices

The Media Training Workshop on LGBTQ Issues held at the Mandarina Hotel in Colombo served as a pivotal platform for media professionals to enhance their understanding of LGBTQ-related topics and improve their reporting practices. By challenging misconceptions, navigating ethical dilemmas, and engaging in practical exercises, participants emerged with a renewed commitment to fostering inclusivity and sensitivity in media representation.

Moving forward, it is imperative to expand outreach efforts and continue advocating for inclusive media practices.
